The Coop

This is the early progression of the coop. Our friend Randy has a lot of experience, and he's built this thing like a fort!!! We feel very fortunate to have had him donate his time and expertise. Also, most of the materials are scraps from other jobs of his, so luckily, we've spent very little considering the quality of the structure.
The door in the front will have a ramp for the chickens to use to get in and out, and the door on the side is bigger so that we can get in and clean the coop easily. The section sticking out of the back will contain the nesting boxes, which will have a removable lid, making it easy to just reach in and get the fresh eggs!!
The remaining tasks for the project are: hanging the doors, finishing the nesting boxes and lid, putting in a roost (for them to perch on at night), and constructing the run, which will be a chicken wire fence to keep the birds contained unless we let them out into the rest of the yard. We love the idea that they will control some of the pest populations (i.e. slugs, snails, etc.) will eat weed seeds, and will fertilize the yard, but unless we are out there to watch them, they will also demolish the garden, so we're glad we'll have an area to keep them contained. We've also put bird netting over all of our raised beds to further deter them when they're in the yard. We'll post the final pictures next week as soon as the project is finished!!
